Amman Ghabawi Landfill Gas to Energy Project 3370

About the project
Amman Vision Treatment & Recycling (AVTR) owns and operates the Amman Ghabawi Landfill Gas to Energy Project at the Al Ghabawi sanitary landfill, approximately 40 km east of Amman. The facility captures the landfill gas generated at the site and uses the recovered methane to generate electricity, which is delivered to the Jordanian national grid. In the absence of the project, this methane would be released directly into the atmosphere.
The project applies the approved methodology ACM0001 “Flaring or use of landfill gas”. Originally registered under the Clean Development Mechanism, it has transitioned to the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement. Alongside its climate benefit, the project supplies renewable electricity to the grid, provides local employment and training, and improves air quality and odour control around the site.
Verification in progress
The independent verification of the project’s first monitoring period, covering 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2025, is currently under way. It is being carried out by the accredited Validation and Verification Body appointed for the activity and included a physical on-site audit at Al Ghabawi on 3–4 August 2026, covering the plant and its monitoring equipment, the monitoring data and emission reduction calculations, the environmental and social safeguards, and interviews with facility personnel and local stakeholders.
Upon completion, the monitoring report and the verification outcome will be published on the UNFCCC website on the activity page for Activity 3370.
Continuous stakeholder feedback channel
In accordance with Section 7.1 of the Article 6.4 activity standard for projects and the Article 6.4 sustainable development tool, we maintain a communication channel that remains continuously open - until the end of the project’s crediting period - through which any stakeholder may submit comments, questions, suggestions or grievances concerning the project. Submissions may be made at any time, free of charge, in Arabic or English.
The channel is open to observations on environmental effects such as air quality, odour, noise or traffic; to health, safety and labour matters at the facility, including those raised by our employees and contractors; to the sustainable development benefits reported by the project; and to any other concern. Comments received are reviewed, addressed and reported in the project’s next monitoring report, and are made available to the independent auditor.
